Pontiac Information
Pontiac Company History
Historically known as one of GM's best values for the money, Pontiac was one of the most successful brands in the division, second only to Chevrolet.
The brand was started in 1926, and was named after Pontiac, Michigan, which is where the cars were built. Its first car, the Six, sold 200,000 models in 1929.
While Pontiac had a bit of a slump in the early 1930s, a remodeling of its looks, combined with a new, straight-eight motor, made the Pontiac Eight, introduced in 1933, a real winner. This car was Pontiac's mainstay until it introduced the V8 in 1955.
Pontiac hit another slump in the 1970s, as all American-made cars struggled with the oil crisis, tougher emissions standards, and overseas competition. Cars like the Grand Prix kept Pontiac's head above water during this difficult time.
Today the Grand Prix is still Pontiac's most popular car, although it makes a wide range of sedans, coupes, and minivans. Learn more about Pontiac vehicles by visiting the sites listed below.
